Some young people grow up waiting for a family that never comes. They never get the chance to belong to a home, and one day they must begin adult life without knowing what to do or where to go. Nicolás shares what it feels like.

I’m Nicolás. For a very long time I waited for someone to come for me. Two years ago, when I turned 18, sadly that wait came to an end.

They told me I could no longer live at the home. Those words left me stunned and confused. Being told I had to find a job, a place to live and take on adult life was very hard.

Even though they told me I could take my time to find somewhere to stay, it was still very disappointing. Thinking that my days of waiting to be adopted were over, and realizing that no one could adopt me anymore. On top of that, I had nowhere to go. I felt a complete emptiness in my life.

Ever since I was a child I have wanted to find my place in the world. Not having a space of my own and not belonging anywhere fills me with a lot of pain. No one has photos of me, and no one knows my story.

Today all of this has become something like a relentless search: searching and searching. Even now, I’m still searching.

Today I can say that I’m no longer looking for a family, only for my place in the world.
